Beant kin slam govt on plea to shift convict
Former
chief minister late Beant Singh's family has condemned the Punjab
government for seeking shifting of Balwant Singh Rajoana, who is on
death row in the assassination case, to Burail Jail in Chandigarh for
his hanging. "It is a shame that a state government, whose chief
minister was militants, wants the place of hanging to be changed from
Punjab to Chandigarh," said Anandpur Sahib MP and Beant Singh's grandson
Ravneet Singh Bittu, while talking to Hindustan Times on phone.
He
demanded that Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal should clarify
why a militant who killed a sitting CM could not be hanged in the same
state.
"If Punjab is prosperous and peaceful today, it is only because of the efforts put in by my grandfather," the MP said.
Bittu also asked Badal to make it clear whether he (CM) was for or against Rajoana's hanging.
"No
one from our family has wished for the hanging. Rajoana himself has
admitted in the court that he was a back-up bomber. I don't know why the
SAD government is reluctant to hang him in Patiala," Bittu said, adding
that vote bank politics should not be the only criterion to look after a
state's interests.
Bittu also demanded the registration
of an FIR against those who were raising slogans of Khalistan Zindabad'
in support of Rajoana.
Meanwhile, Congress MLA from
Khanna Gurkirat Kotli, who is also Beant Singh's grandson, said the
family would discuss the government's move with senior party leaders as
the late CM was a respected Congress leader.
"Our family has never
interfered in the case. We have never harboured revenge or vendetta
against anyone and want the law to take its own course," he said, adding
that the government's plea on shifting Rajoana to Chandigarh had upset
the slain CM's family.
